CHURCHILL. WINSTON. S.
Published by Cassell & Co. Ltd. London. 1948-54.
FIRST EDITIONS, first impressions. 6 volumes. 8vo. ( 8.6 x 5.8 inches). INSCRIBED BY WINSTON CHURCHILL on the half title page of volume one, "Inscribed by Winston S. Churchill. 1948". Previous owners name, and date - September 1948- on the blank verso of the front free endpaper opposite. Loosely inserted is a letter from Churchill's Private Secretary, Jo Sturdee, on 28 Hyde Park Gate notepaper, "November 26 '48. Dear Betty, Mr Churchill was glad to sign your copy of "The Gathering Storm" for you, and I return it to you herewith. Yours Sincerely, Jo Sturdee. - P.S. Also captain Beer's copy, which perhaps you could hand over with kind regards, messages & what not. Jo. ". Nina Edith 'Jo' Sturdee was a Private Secretary to Churchill from 1942 to 1953. The letter's recipient, Betty (Mary Elizabeth) Green, was secretary to General Sir Hastings Ismay, Churchill's Chief Military assistant during the Second World War, and the previous owners name on the front endpaper was a member of her family.
Illustrated with maps and diagrams, some folding, throughout the volumes. Original publishers black cloth, the spines lettered in gilt. The cloth bindings are very clean and the gilt lettering is still very sharp and bright. A fresh and bright set in the publishers original dustwrappers which have some minor fading to the spines, but much less so than often found with this set. The red lettering that is so prone to fading is still readable and bright on all six volumes. Overall a better than very good set with the added bonus of Churchill's signature in volume 1 and great provenance.
