Houlghton, Chorley Longcase
A fine quality Cheshire moon phase longcase clock in an impressive case with choice mahogany case veneers with marquetry inlays. Brass capped fluted hood columns, trunk sides with canted base corners. Fan inlays to the base panel and a swan-neck hood pediment surmounted by 3 original wooden finials. An attractive painted dial with floral corners, birds and 5 minute outer markers. Lunar moon phases and a date dial. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell.
The Houghton family of clockmakers are well recorded in Loomes' 'Lancashire Clockmakers' book and worked in the 18th and 19th centuries in and around the Liverpool area. This clock is by James or John and is circa 1790.
